As a Database Reliability Engineer in our Database Reliability Engineering (DBRE) team, you'll be a core owner of the Wise database estate that powers every transaction and customer experience. Your mission is to empower our growth by engineering reliable, scalable, and performant database solutions using PostgreSQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, and Redis/Valkey. You'll collaborate closely with Database Platform and Product Engineering teams, applying sound engineering principles to automate infrastructure, establish best practices, and build guardrails that keep customer data safe. With a strong platform engineering mindset, deep database knowledge, and automation skills, you'll drive observability, capacity planning, and performance tuning in a 24/7 production environment. Key Responsibilities

  • Own and maintain the Wise database estate (PostgreSQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, Redis/Valkey)
  • Engineer reliable, scalable, and performant database solutions at scale
  • Collaborate with Database Platform and Product Engineering teams
  • Apply automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles using Terraform or Ansible
  • Establish best practices and guardrails for database security and reliability
  • Perform capacity planning, observability, and performance tuning
  • Empower Wise's growth through database infrastructure enhancements
  • Build tooling to support self-service for engineering teams

Required Qualifications

  • Proven experience managing large-scale, highly available PostgreSQL deployments in a 24/7 production environment
  • Proactive approach to system reliability, observability, and capacity planning
  • Deep understanding of PostgreSQL internals, replication, and performance tuning
  • Demonstrable expertise in database administration, security, and reliability best practices

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to distributed database technologies (e.g. YugabyteDB, CockroachDB, TiDB)
  • Experience working with Redis/Valkey, MongoDB and/or MariaDB/MySQL
  • Experience in building self-service tooling for engineers, analysts or data scientists
  • Knowledge/interest in payment platforms, foreign exchange & highly complex systems
  • Be a customer of Wise
