Engineering Lead II - Personal Onboarding Verification

About the Role

Join Wise's Personal Onboarding Verification team within the Global KYC and Onboarding Squad, where you'll lead engineers building end-to-end KYC solutions for individual customers. From triggering checks and document collection to ML-powered automated reviews and final onboarding decisions, your team powers Wise's world-class platform that redefines money movement with minimal fees and maximum ease. As Engineering Lead II, you'll coach a cross-functional team, shape technical strategy alongside Product, Design, Analytics, and Data Science leads, and ensure scalable delivery aligned with Wise's mission. With a strong technical foundation in Java and microservices, you'll foster collaboration, ownership, and innovation in a diverse, global environment. Wise offers 7,900-9,600 EUR monthly + RSUs in Tallinn (Global team), flexible working, and a culture celebrating differences for everyone, everywhere. Help build the future of money without borders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and mentor a cross-functional team of engineers, supporting their growth
  • Work closely with function leads (Product, Design, Analytics, Data Science) to shape roadmap and technical vision
  • Ensure team delivers on product goals in a robust and scalable way
  • Enable team success through effective resourcing and planning
  • Build clear tech strategy aligned with product and marketing goals, setting high quality standards
  • Own team health, productivity, and culture of collaboration and continuous improvement
  • Collaborate with other engineering leads across the Squad and Wise teams for alignment

Required Qualifications

  • Strong technical background in OOP Languages (Java preferably) and modern technology stacks
  • Proven experience in leading and mentoring software engineers
  • Strong product and customer mindset with experience building customer-facing products
  • Experience working with and building distributed, high scalability systems and microservices architectures
  • Great communicator who can articulate complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Thrives in collaborative environments with cross-functional peers (designers, product managers, analysts, data scientists)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in KYC/Onboarding processes
  • Background in financial technology or fintech
  • Familiarity with ML models in verification systems
