Platform Engineer - Database Platform team

About the Role

Join Wise's Database Platform team as a Platform Engineer (IC2 level) and build the scalable, reliable, and secure internal database platform powering hundreds of databases across global environments. You'll design and develop automation, self-service tooling, and observability systems that enable hundreds of engineers to manage a critical estate of ~1,000 instances with 'Databases as a Service'. Focus on high-scale systems, embedding best practices for security, reliability, and zero-downtime operations while simplifying complex infrastructure for product teams. Work holistically across the Platform tribe, collaborating with Data teams to deliver reusable designs and developer-friendly platforms. Own end-to-end solutions with minimal supervision, leveraging automation and programmatic implementation to help Wise scale its mission of money without borders. This role offers the chance to impact customer data availability and performance worldwide in a collaborative team valuing technical excellence and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and evolve our internal cloud-based database platform
• Develop self-service tooling that improves developer experience and abstracts operational complexity
• Automate common database management tasks and embed security and reliability best practices
• Own production systems end-to-end with a zero-downtime mindset
• Plan and deliver your own solutions to complex problems with minimal supervision
• Work on high-scale systems used by hundreds of engineers
• Shape how we run databases globally through automation, observability, and platform thinking
• Collaborate across the Platform tribe to make systems more resilient and developer-friendly

Required Qualifications

• 2+ years of Platform Engineering experience (not software-only)
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP)
• Strong Python development skills (or similar)
• Solid understanding of software engineering principles - writing secure, testable, maintainable code
• Proficiency with Cloud APIs and DevOps tooling (Terraform, Ansible, CI/CD, Teleport)
• Clear communicator who collaborates well across teams

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with distributed databases at scale (e.g., YugabyteDB, TiDB, Google Cloud Spanner etc.)
• Experience with workflow engines (Temporal, Cadence)
• Experience building Database-as-a-Service platforms or internal developer tooling
• (Optional) Some front-end development experience
