About the Role

Join Wise's Core Accounting team in Finance as a Senior Software Engineer and help build the ledger as a service that powers over 1 billion ledger entries monthly. You'll design, develop, and own key initiatives like financial aggregation pipelines and 3rd party integrations using Java, Spring Boot, PostgreSQL, Kafka, and React in a microservices environment. Collaborate cross-functionally to make financial processes timely, accurate, and controlled, while leading technical roadmaps and mentoring engineers. Take ownership of large-scale projects, drive product impact through technical leadership, and ensure scalable, reliable systems with strong APIs. You'll work in global squads vital to Wise's mission of moving money without borders, contributing to financial accounting for board, investors, regulators, and auditors. Key Responsibilities

• Own large-scale projects and lead technical roadmap for significant initiatives
• Design scalable backend services and APIs with long-term scalability
• Work across the full stack with strength in backend technologies
• Drive technical roadmap and provide product thinking feedback
• Proactively manage technical debt and promote cross-team collaboration
• Mentor engineers and lead onboarding for new team members
• Ensure team follows engineering best practices (observability, security, testing)
• Design, develop, and test applications using Java, Spring Boot, PostgreSQL, Kafka, and React

Required Qualifications

• Expert-level knowledge in backend technologies
• Strong understanding of frontend technologies
• Solid understanding of distributed systems and microservices
• Experience designing and building scalable, maintainable systems
• Proven ability to coach and develop other engineers
• Excellent communication skills across engineering, product, design, and other functions
• Ownership mindset with long-term ownership and knowledge sharing

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in financial systems or ledger services
• Knowledge of 3rd party financial integrations
• Full-stack development experience with React
