Join our Business Onboarding Verification team as a Staff Software Engineer - Business KYC, where you'll transform frustrating verification processes into fast, intuitive experiences. Your work will empower small businesses to access global banking faster, help entrepreneurs pay international teams on time, and enable companies to expand without borders—directly removing barriers to financial freedom. You'll lead as a technical expert in a cross-functional team of backend/frontend engineers, mobile developers, designers, data analysts, and product managers. Owning the full verification lifecycle—from document collection and automated reviews to agent tools and compliance—you'll design scalable Java/Spring Boot services, mentor engineers, drive architecture, and innovate in a regulated space with high autonomy and data-driven decisions. With 10+ years of experience, strong system design skills, and a passion for security and performance, you'll make a real impact on millions of businesses worldwide. Base salary £105,000 - £130,000 + RSUs, flexible global work, and Wise's inclusive culture await.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain high-performance, scalable backend services using Java, Spring Boot, and cloud technologies
• Lead technical initiatives that improve verification systems, focusing on automation, reliability, and performance
• Collaborate with product managers to translate business requirements into technical solutions
• Mentor junior engineers, providing technical guidance and code reviews
• Drive architectural decisions and technical strategy for verification systems
• Build internal tools that help verification agents work efficiently
• Contribute to engineering culture through knowledge sharing and best practices

Required Qualifications

• 10+ years of Java 8+ knowledge with recent experience in Spring framework
• Strong system design skills with experience building distributed, high-throughput services
• Experience working with databases (SQL mainly)
• Track record of leading technical initiatives and mentoring other engineers
• Strong understanding of security best practices and data protection principles
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
