  • Participate in the pre-anesthetic evaluation of patients and the selection of anesthetic agents and techniques.
  • Perform appropriate techniques of the anesthetic plan, including insertion of intravenous catheters, insertion of invasive monitoring catheters, endotracheal intubation and extubation, and arterial punctures.
  • Monitor the patient’s physical response to anesthesia and inform the surgeon and/or anesthesiologist of any adverse condition.

  • Recognize abnormal patient responses to anesthesia or adjunctive medications and initiate corrective measures.

  • Evaluate and manage patients in the immediate post-operative period.
  • Administer IV fluids relative to the patient’s medical history and surgical procedure.
  • Administer blood products after obtaining a hematocrit and consulting with the surgeon and/or anesthesiologist.
  • Document the patient status in the anesthesia record appropriately.

  • Procure and assemble equipment and supplies as indicated if an anesthesia technician is not available.
