The PET Tech is responsible for performing a full range of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) procedures to provide optimum information for the diagnosis and/or treatment of patients. This includes:
Your day as a PET Tech at WVU Medicine will be diverse and engaging. You'll start by reviewing the daily schedule and preparing the imaging suite for the first patient. This includes ensuring that all equipment is functioning properly and that the necessary radiopharmaceuticals are available. As patients arrive, you'll greet them with a warm and reassuring demeanor, explaining the PET scan procedure and addressing any concerns they may have. You will then administer the radiopharmaceutical, carefully following established protocols and safety guidelines.
During the scan, you'll operate the PET imaging equipment, monitoring the patient's condition and ensuring their comfort. You will acquire high-quality images and process them using specialized software. After the scan, you'll evaluate the images for quality and accuracy, making any necessary adjustments. You will then collaborate with radiologists and other physicians to interpret the results and contribute to the patient's diagnosis and treatment plan.
Throughout the day, you'll also be involved in maintaining the PET imaging equipment, performing quality control checks, and adhering to all radiation safety protocols. You'll also have the opportunity to participate in departmental meetings, training sessions, and continuing education activities.
