Responsibilities

  • Administers external radiation therapy to patients as prescribed by a radiation oncologist to affect curative or palliative treatment of disease.
  • Performs simulations and localization according to established protocols and produces usable images for the planning and verifying of treatment procedures.
  • Coordinates the activities of the Staff Radiation Therapists to ensure quality treatment delivery and maximum utilization of both equipment and personnel.
  • Leads the therapist team in developing new techniques or resolving clinical problems.
  • Manages the triage of emergent cases and coordinates all on-call activities with the on-call therapist.
  • Negotiates scheduling of patients with other departmental patient care team members.
  • Trains and mentors students in the WVU Radiation Therapy Technology Program.
  • Maintains overall quality control of treatments and ensures adherence to established protocols.
  • Assists in the development of department programs and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Promotes the philosophy and goals of the Department of Radiation Oncology through leadership, management, and professional development of the radiation therapy staff.
  • Evaluates the clinical performance of staff radiation therapists and provides constructive feedback.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements and accreditation standards.
  • Participates in continuing education and professional development activities to maintain expertise in radiation therapy.
  • Collaborates with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive patient care.
  • Maintains accurate and complete patient records.
  • Monitors equipment performance and reports any malfunctions or issues to the appropriate personnel.
  • Assists in the selection and evaluation of new equipment and technologies.
  • Participates in departmental meetings and committees.
  • Contributes to research and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provides education and support to patients and their families.
