Role Overview

The AI Tasks team at Zapier builds the bridge between cutting-edge AI capabilities and practical user needs. As Engineering Manager, you'll lead a team of 8-12 elite engineers building features like guided prompting, AI-powered task execution, and human-in-the-loop controls. This role reports directly to our VP of Engineering and partners closely with Product and Design leadership. You'll tackle the hardest problems in AI adoption: helping non-experts discover AI value, overcoming blank-canvas prompting paralysis, building trust through transparency, and scaling complexity safely.

Key Responsibilities

1. Lead end-to-end development of LLM-powered automation features serving millions of users monthly
2. Hire, mentor, and grow a world-class engineering team specializing in AI experiences
3. Prototype novel AI interfaces including guided prompting and human-in-the-loop workflows
4. Design scalable architecture for AI systems handling enterprise-scale workloads
5. Collaborate with PMs to prioritize roadmap balancing innovation and reliability
6. Run sophisticated A/B experiments measuring AI adoption and productivity impact
7. Ensure production excellence through CI/CD, monitoring, and on-call rotation
8. Champion responsible AI practices including bias mitigation and transparency controls
9. Partner with Customer Success to understand real user pain points and iterate rapidly
10. Present technical roadmaps to executive leadership and external conferences
11. Code review 30% hands-on while scaling team delivery velocity
12. Build culture of experimentation where failures accelerate learning
13. Represent AI Tasks team in company-wide technical strategy discussions

Qualifications

Must Have:

• 5+ years shipping LLM-powered products, preferably consumer-facing
• 3+ years managing engineering teams delivering at scale
• Deep fluency in TypeScript/React/Node.js stack (Python/Django bonus)
• Proven ability to prototype user-facing AI experiences rapidly
• Experience designing for non-expert AI users (guided flows, trust features)

Ideal Background:

• Previously built human-in-the-loop AI systems
• Spearheaded AI adoption initiatives across organizations
• Managed on-call rotations for mission-critical services
• Published technical blogs or spoken at AI/ML conferences
• Experience with workflow automation platforms

Salary & Benefits

Competitive Compensation: $220,000 - $320,000 USD base salary (NAMER) + equity + bonus, depending on experience and location. Total compensation places candidates in top 10% for similar roles per Levels.fyi data.
