Zapier's Workflow Zone is the heart of our automation platform, powering everything from simple task automation to complex Enterprise workflows. We're seeking experienced Senior Backend Engineers and Full Stack Engineers (backend-leaning) to join high-impact teams including Code Experience, Runner, and Troubleshooting.

The Runner team focuses on execution infrastructure—scaling latency-sensitive systems that power Zapier's core product. The Troubleshooting team prevents errors and builds intuitive debugging tools. Code Experience enhances developer tools for custom automation logic.

Key Responsibilities

As a Sr. Software Engineer in Workflow Zone, you'll:

• Develop and maintain the execution engine handling millions of daily Zap runs with sub-second latency
• Build proactive error detection systems that surface issues before users notice
• Design intuitive debugging interfaces that turn complex failures into actionable insights
• Scale microservices architecture to support Enterprise customers with advanced workflow logic
• Implement robust retry mechanisms, circuit breakers, and failure recovery patterns
• Optimize PostgreSQL queries and Redis caching layers for high-throughput scenarios
• Integrate AI-powered workflow generation and troubleshooting capabilities
• Collaborate with product managers to evolve execution primitives and logic operators
• Enhance observability with distributed tracing, metrics, and alerting
• Work cross-functionally with Support, Infrastructure, and Design teams
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team technical vision
• Lead reliability initiatives across the Workflow Zone
• Build developer tools for Code Experience team integrations

Expect to ship production code weekly in a fast-paced, outcome-focused environment.

Qualifications

Must-haves:

• 7+ years professional software engineering experience
• Expertise in backend systems (Node.js, Python, Go preferred)
• Proven experience scaling distributed systems to millions of requests/day
• Deep database knowledge (PostgreSQL, Redis, queueing systems)
• Strong observability and debugging skills in production environments

Nice-to-haves:

• Experience with workflow orchestration or automation platforms
• AI/ML integration experience
• Cloud infrastructure (AWS, Kubernetes)
• Full stack experience (React, TypeScript)

Salary & Benefits

Competitive Compensation: $165,000 - $235,000 USD base salary (depending on experience/location), plus equity and performance bonus.
